Two-time Grammy award-winning Turtle Island Quartet will be performing at the Orem Library on May 10, 2022. The quartet will present a special performance from its extensive repertory of folk, bluegrass, swing, be-bop, funk, R&B, new age, rock, hip-hop, and hundreds of original arrangements. In preparation for their upcoming performance, violinist David Balakrishnan sat down with library staff to talk about what he’s listening to and what inspires him.
These days I am blessed to be spending time with one of the best musicians on the planet, Terence Blanchard. Terence—like all truly great artists—has had a huge effect beyond the music realm and into culture. It’s hard to say in words how his music affects me. Right now I am diving deeply into his latest opera, “Fire Shut In My Bones.”
Of course, any of Terence’s records is going to be top level. Terence’s band, The E-Collective, are all amazing jazz musicians at the top of their game so to speak. So, it’s no surprise that the music I am listening to these days is related to being on the road with them, soaking up the sound of their brilliant music making, as well as all the others they interact with.
