By Elizabeth George Speare
The Witch of Blackbird Pond is a junior historical fiction book by Elizabeth George Speare. It takes place in late 17th-century New England when Kit Tyler comes from Barbados to stay with her aunt. The book takes us through meeting several interesting characters and ultimately Kit’s journey in starting a new life. There are some fairly intense scenes and some older language (thee, thou, etc.), so as a read-alone I would recommend this for ages 9+.
I personally enjoyed this book because of the older feel and the well-developed characters. There is a good flow in the action of the story and interesting relationships between characters with different perspectives and ways of life. Anyone who is interested in the American witch trials is sure to enjoy this book.
