The Rig

By Joe Ducie
Teen Fiction

The Rig is the first book in a series by Joe Ducie. I picked up this book to read aloud with my 13 year old son. He typically is only interested in non-fiction or graphic novels, so I was pleasantly surprised when this book captured his attention. The story is centered around Will Drake, a 15 year old serial prison escape artist. He is put in a unique prison on an old oil rig in the middle of the Arctic Ocean specifically designed for the worst juvenile offenders and quickly discovers that not everything is as it seems. The recommended age group is 10-12 year olds, but it has some violence and language so I’m not sure I would recommend it to 5th graders. I think it’s the perfect book for middle school age readers who enjoy action and adventure. My son enjoyed reading this book with me and we both look forward to reading the second book in the series.
