Picture Book

The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World’s Coral Reefs is a nonfiction picture book created by award winners Kate Messner and Matthew Forsythe. In this book, you’ll learn about Ken Nedimyer, who is founder of the Coral Restoration Foundation. Ken’s father was a NASA engineer who loved space, but Ken loved the ocean. Readers then find out how Ken initiated the restoration of dying Florida coral reefs by regrowing healthy colonies. Specifically, he does this by out-planting coral to the reef. The illustrations in this book are great. Forsythe’s pastel drawings show the delicate balance of ocean life, ecosystems, and restoration. Even better, informational articles, links, and vocabulary are listed at the end of the book.
