Ready to sail away into the sunset after a long school year? Pack a good book and explore the depths of the ocean with us this summer! Besides a variety of any time and take-home activities, we’ll have live events, an escape room, and prizes as part of our Oceans of Possibilities program. If you’re reading and navigation skills are top notch, you’ll even earn a ticket to our finale at the Scera Pool for a little celebratory swimming! Mark your calendars for our Summer Reading Kickoff on June 1, which will be an aquatic fossil show by the Hutchings Museum.
This year, we’re pleased to announce some exciting new changes to the program.
We have a new and improved website through Beanstack, a web and app-based program made specifically for school and library reading challenges. On June 1, join us at https://www.orem.beanstack.org or the Beanstack app to register. After you’ve registered, you will automatically be enrolled in the appropriate age-based reading challenge.
Participation by Individual and Age Group
This year the participation will be done as individuals. A caregiver or another responsible teen or adult can sign up as an “account creator” and register and manage the reader accounts of dependents or other members of their household as desired. We added a challenge geared for adults as well! The other challenges include toddlers/preschoolers (ages 0–5), elementary age children (ages 6–11), teens (ages 12–18), and adults (19+).
There are two types of badges you can earn: logging badges and event badges. Logging badges are earned by logging minutes spent reading. Activity badges are earned by attending library programs and by participating in activities like art or swimming.
This year, the escape room is open to everyone! Registration begins June 27, and the room will run from July 11-13. Recommended for ages 6 and older.
This year, there are two rewards for completing a logging or activity badge: reading prizes and tickets to the finale prize giveaway! Once you complete 3 reading badges, you’ve earned Prize 1, which is a bookmark. When you complete 6 badges, you’ll earn Prize 2, which is a selection of discounted coupons and free admission passes to local restaurants and attractions. At 9 reading badges, you’ll earn Prize 3, which is a small toy or prize. If you earn at least 12 badges by 11:59 PM on July 17, you will complete the program and earn the completion prize: admission for your family to attend the Scera Pool Party on July 19 at 6:30 PM. The tickets you’ve earned will also be entered into our finale prize giveaway.
We’re not only offering more prizes this year, but more times to redeem them! Starting June 6, the prize pick-up desk will be open all summer long on Mondays from 5 to 9 PM and Tuesday through Thursday from 10 AM to noon in the north lobby of Library Hall.
What do you have to lose? Register to participate on June 1 and make a splash in our Oceans of Possibilities reading program this summer!
