The Outer Limits

Television Series

Are you a fan of The Twilight Zone? If so, you might want to check out The Outer Limits. This show aired in the mid-1960s and it has some similarities to The Twilight Zone. However, it tends to have a more science fiction feel than The Twilight Zone. I remember seeing reruns come on tv when I was a child. However, I seldom watched the show as I was scared of the monsters that were featured in some of the episodes. These days the monsters appear rather cheesy to me. I recently discovered that Orem Library has both Seasons 1 and 2 in our collection in both regular dvd and Blu-ray.

The Outer Limits featured a number of actors you will recognize from later fame (i.e. Leonard Nimoy, Marion Ross, Robert Duvall, Morgan Brittany, William Shatner, Adam West, etc.). Although the episodes are in black & white, the images are very clear and the episodes contain some interesting storylines.

One Step Beyond

Television Series

Did you enjoy the tv series The X-Files? If so, you might want to look into One Step Beyond. I stumbled onto the series accidentally several years ago here at the Orem Library. The show aired from 1959-1961 and was hosted by John Newland, “your guide into the world of the unknown.” Episodes were said to be based on true events that defy rational explanation.

Although Orem Library has several DVDs with episodes of One Step Beyond, my favorite is the Collector’s Edition (two dvds). One Step Beyond featured a number of future TV and film stars (i.e. Cloris Leachman, Christopher Lee, Elizabeth Montgomery, Warren Beatty, Suzanne Pleshette, Charles Bronson, etc.). Episodes ventured into such paranormal subjects as precognition, apparitions, possession, bilocation, Bigfoot, and spirit rapping. The film quality of individual episodes vary a great deal. That said, the subject matter is provocative and the stories are engaging.
