The Hunger Games

By Suzanne Collins
Teen Fiction

If any of you are interested in survival and action genres, this is the book for you. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a bestselling book that is well known. The story revolves around the protagonist, named Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a poor district in a dystopian world. This world has 12 districts in existence as well as an oppressive government ruling over the districts. As a result of previous wars/conflicts, each of the 12 districts are forced to send one teenage boy and girl to fight in a survival deathmatch to the last person standing with a total of 24 participants. In a series of events, Katniss is chosen to participate in the hunger games and goes to the Capitol (the oppressive central government) to prepare and fight in the killing game.

Again, for those who like action, survival, political/social schemes, romance, dystopian worlds, and the like, this book is one of the best books out there. However, if you dislike tragedy, you should probably steer clear. I personally think the book is pretty interesting especially because of the way the main character wins over the masses and because of her determination to win for her family. The action, planning, and high stakes will keep readers on their toes. There’s suspense and unpredictability throughout the book that always keeps it interesting.
