Tuna Lettuce Wraps | Kids Can Cook Recipe Review

Are you familiar with a fairy tale called The Fisherman and His Wife? It’s about a man who catches a magical fish who can grant wishes! Guess what happens when his wife finds out? I’m not going to tell; you have to read the fairy tale to find out!

But I will tell you about a great recipe that uses tuna fish. One of the things I love about hot summer days is cool summer food. This awesome tuna recipe from the cookbook Six Ingredient Meals with Six Sisters’ Stuff is something you can make any time of the year, and it’s a versatile recipe. You can change just a couple of things and make a new recipe that suits your own taste buds: make lettuce wraps or a salad or even a sandwich. Get creative and get cooking with this recipe! Maybe it will be your lunchtime wish come true!

Tuna Lettuce Wraps

Serves 2 – 3

What you need:
  • 1 5-oz can tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish OR finely diced dill pickle [Have your grown-up helper do the chopping]
  • 1 – 2 tbsp mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
  • ½ tsp lemon juice
  • ½ – 1 tsp Dijon mustard, optional (gives a nippy flavor that some kid chefs love, and some not so much)
  • Salt and pepper
  • 3 lettuce leaves (Romaine or Boston bibb lettuce work well)

What you do:

  1. Place tuna, relish, mayo or Miracle Whip, lemon juice and Dijon mustard (if using) in a medium bowl and stir until well combined. Make sure there are no lumps of mayo or tuna, everything should be evenly mixed together.
  2. Season with a little salt and pepper (just a pinch of each).
  3. Place each lettuce leaf on a salad plate and top with a scoop of tuna mixture. Roll the lettuce around the tuna like a burrito and serve.

Helpful Hints & Hacks
  • If you have more than a couple people sharing lunch with you, this recipe can easily be doubled. Just use twice as much of each ingredient that is called for in the recipe. So instead of 1 can of tuna, you need…how many? Yep, two cans!
  • You can add ingredients to the tuna mixture like chopped tomato, chopped green or red bell pepper, chopped avocado, chopped celery, or shredded carrot. Add about ¼ cup of each veggie you choose, and put in a little extra mayonnaise, too so it all holds together nicely and isn’t too dry.
  • To keep my fingers safe when chopping veggies, I often use a manual food chopper, like the one in the photo. It’s handy, and safe and easy to use.
